Digital ageing in Europe: a comparative analysis of Italian, Finnish and Swedish national policies on eHealth

2023

AbstractAgeing Europeans are today healthier than previous generations and often manage to live independently up to a high age. The proportion of people 80 years of age and older has increased significantly, and with high age the risk of multi-illness and dementia increases. Strong urbanisation processes have changed the demographic structure in rural areas, and young women and men have migrated towards the urban areas to study and work, while older persons have remained behind. This demographic challenge of increasing numbers of persons older than 80 years with care needs living in remote rural areas has become a major European social problem. In tackling this dilemma, many European countr…

Domestication of a Robotic Medication-Dispensing Service Among Older People in Finnish Lapland

2020

This paper presents a case study on a robotic medication-dispensing service used in the everyday lives of older people in Finnish Lapland through the concept of domestication. The study took an ethnographic approach. A total of 11 service users, practical nurses, and other health-care professionals participated; the service users averaged age 81 years (M= 81.4, SD = 5.4). The data comprised semistructured interviews complemented by observations and photographs at service users’ homes. We concluded that the domestication of the service was successful, although the service users sometimes felt that it limited their lives. The service users stated that learning and subsequently using the servi…

Pienten maaseutukuntien mahdollisuudet biokaasun hyödyntämiseen : esimerkkinä Soinin kunta

2012

Biokaasua voidaan tuottaa erilaisista orgaanisista materiaaleista kuten maatalouden lannasta, jätevesistä, energiakasveista tai biojätteistä. Orgaanisista jätteistä etenkin lantaa syntyy maaseudulla merkittäviä määriä, mutta pienissä maaseutukunnissa muiden orgaanisten jätteiden materiaalivirrat voivat olla pieniä. Pienten maaseutukuntien metaanipotentiaalia tutkittiin tapauskohtaisesti Etelä-Pohjanmaalla sijaitsevassa Soinin kunnassa. Soinin biokaasun tuotannon mahdollisuudet selvitettiin kunnallisen jäteveden, erilliskerätyn biojätteen, maatalouden lannan ja nurmipotentiaalin materiaalivirtojen avulla käyttäen apuna vuosien 2011 ja 2012 tietoja. Jäteveden kuivatun lietteen, naudan lietela…

Places of Belonging, Places of Detachment:

2022

This chapter contributes to the ongoing discussion about rural belonging by considering the role of historical consciousness (Rüsen, 2004) in the process of belonging in a place. The chapter suggests that young people’s temporal orientation in relation to local culture and history plays a significant role in their commitment to rural communities. The analysis draws on qualitative longitudinal data from Finnish girls, aged 16–19, from two sparsely populated regions (Central Finland and the Northern Finnish Sámi homeland). The chapter shows how multiple strands of commitment tie rural young people to their local surroundings, where the past is present in the landscape and everyday life in a m…
